Claim it Texas: Search for Unclaimed Property
Saturday, December 18th, 2010Might the state be holding onto unclaimed property of yours? ClaimitTexas.org is the state’s site for unclaimed property, and you could be one of millions who stand to benefit.
The state of Texas is required to hold onto personal property which goes unclaimed after a certain amount of time. Currently, it has more than 2.2 billion dollars in unclaimed assets, and it returned $163 million in 2010. A quarter of Texans have unclaimed money and items from old bank accounts, royalty and payroll checks, insurance policies, safe-deposit boxes and other sources.
If you are owed money, you will need to prove your identity and an address if it’s different from the one they have on file. Heirs and estate managers can claim property for those they represent once they prove their claimant status.
If you think you have unclaimed money in other states, unclaimed.org allows you to search other state’s holdings, while missingmoney.com is a national search.
The average claim amount is around $1,000, with the largest amount claimed at $4.3 million. You might not be so fortunate to have millions in unclaimed property, but searching is so simple that a quick inquiry might turn out to be well worth your time.
